I recently received an email from a reader asking what advice I could offer someone whose partner ridicules their efforts at self-improvement. More often than not, normal people don’t want us to change – those close to us might feel uncomfortable, they might fear being left behind. And as for those outside our closest inner circle, if we’re lucky enough to have one... well, not only do they not give a damn about you – they’re probably likely to relish the prospect of you falling on your face and making a complete idiot of yourself – there’s nothing better to chat about at the water cooler... My point this morning is that you need to be careful who you tell what you wish for – a twist on the old expression but an important one nevertheless. Your own mind, in its default state, tends towards the negative (that’s why it’s so important to exercise mentally every day) so, if you’re being niggled by normal negative people, you’re going to start doubting yourself, your goals and your ambitions. God knows it’s hard enough to keep ourselves mentally focused without having to listen to people who don’t want you to succeed. Stack the cards in your favour. Don’t let outsiders into your personal secrets as regards effortless success – unfortunately, some of those outsiders may be very close at hand but I’m not a relationship counsellor. The best form of self-defence is to ensure that you don’t expose yourself in the first place. |
