The Lost Art of Doing Nothing | The Holiday Mood | ||||||||||
|
I travelled home from Dublin into Geneva airport on Saturday. The plane was completely full of couples, groups and families taking off for the Easter break – all decked out in their ski jackets, all full of the joys of life – all really looking forward to a week or two of fun. But what about when they return to “reality” in a week or two’s time? Will they be looking back with fond memories of the pistes? Will they be looking forward to their next holiday? I once had a client who told me that the only way he kept himself sane was to immediately book his next holiday on the evening he came home from the last one – he literally lived from holiday to holiday. It may be an extreme case – but it’s not too far from the way so many people make it through the days or weeks until their next break. But what about the bit in between – the big bit – perhaps forty six or forty eight weeks out of the fifty two? If you’re looking forward or looking back with fond memories, you’re not present. If the only way you can drag yourself out of bed on a normal weekday is to look forward to your next break – even if it’s just the weekend – there’s something seriously wrong with you. Not your life – you – because it’s you who creates your life. You know the way you wake up when you’re on holidays – no alarm clock (but you might even wake up earlier) – no noise in your head (except, perhaps, from a little too much indulgence the night before) – a clear head. You should be waking up like that every morning. Every morning should be the start of a day of excitement and unknown potential because, in reality, every day is. I know that you can’t pretend that you’re on holiday when you’re not – and I’m not suggesting that you play pretend at all. But you can master your mind, control your mood and set about your day (neither looking forward nor back) with an air of carefree expectation. Get in the holiday mood. |
