WE'RE ALL SUFFERING FROM THE EFFECTS OF NORMALITY | SLEEPING SUICIDE | ||||||||||
|
We’re slowly sucking the life out of ourselves. It started in childhood when we were told to sit up straight, stop making noise, forget the things that turn us on and to steer clear of fanciful ideas for our future – we had to get a good education, get a good job, retire and die! Our spontaneity, our joie de vivre, our unbridled imagination – these were the things that ruled our lives – that created fun, that made long sunny summer holiday days seem to go on for ever. We were in what the University of Chicago describes as “flow” – we were “Gurdy”. We were carefree, open to all kind of possibilities, exciting and adventurous. Is that you this morning? Can you say that you’re excited every morning when you leap out of bed? Do you live carefree a carefree life? Are you open to all life’s possibilities? You may well say that we had to grow up – but, I’m pretty sure that the record (years of psychological research) states that people grow older – they rarely grow up! If you did bother to grow up, you’d be able to control your state of mind. You’d choose to be carefree, spontaneous, turned on. You’d decide to leap out of bed, excited. You’d be alert and open to all life’s wonderful possibilities. However, adolescence changed the electrical activity in our brains – our mental processes sped up, our logical processes took over. Or at least that’s what the normal person thinks! There’s nothing logical about worry, about making yourself stressed (because that’s how stress works). There’s nothing logical about closing your eyes to today’s opportunities. But that’s how we are – our subconscious minds living in and longing for those sunny summer holiday days – our conscious minds distracted by the cares and worries of what might happen – instead of focusing, as we did as children, on the here and now. You’re slowly killing yourself – existing in this half-life of useless thought and worry, you’re as good as dead. But you can become like a little child again – clear, focused, open-minded, fun loving, up for life’s great adventure. You choose your state of mind. You can decide to come to your senses, literally. Stop to “smell the roses” this morning and you will have taken today’s most important action. |
