HOW DOING NOTHING IS EVERYTHING | BEHAVIOUR AND RESPONSIBILITY | ||||||||
|
Too often we confuse our inappropriate behaviour with ourselves. We are not our inappropriate behaviour, we are not even the person who behaved in an inappropriate way – our personality is the one who automatically creates our, always reactive, inappropriate behaviour. So can we absolve ourselves from our inappropriate behaviour? Of course not, we are the ones who forewent control of our state of mind to allow it happen. But we can certainly discard false feelings, such as guilt, which only heap further useless thought on top of all the resident useless thoughts on which our personality thrives. We have to grow up and take responsibility for the one and only thing in our lives for which we can be wholly responsible – our state of mind. The normal state of mind is such that it panders to our personality – lets it do what it will. We have to free ourselves from the normal state of mindlessness and become mindful. Mindfulness demands that we pay attention to the reality of the moment and, by doing so, discard the deep-down thoughts that drive us to do things that we should not wish to do. Mindfulness only comes about through a commitment to develop and nurture a clear and present mind. But it is a commitment that will not only change our own lives – it may just change the world. |
