Today's Quick Tip |
Life is not a bowl of cherries - to misquote the old song! Life is, more often than not, a challenge. However, don't confuse life's challenges with some kind of fixed pattern of struggle or failure. All things - good, bad and indifferent - arise and then pass on. This is a fundamental truth of life. So, if you're feeling challenged right now, stop, take a few deep breaths, re-focus and do whatever you have to do in the sure and certain knowledge that today's challenge is nothing but a passing phase. |

FOCUS ON FOCUS - PART 4: OPERATIONAL FOCUS | WILL YOU CHANGE YOUR LIFE LIKE THAT? | ||||||||||||||
|
Over the years I’ve met plenty of people who wanted to change their life- for all sorts of reasons from the proverbial midlife crisis to the career crossroads, from low self esteem to fear of public speaking, from wanting to learn the art of true leadership to simply wanting to be happy – I’ve seen it all. And, the bizarre thing is, that I keep seeing the same thing! All these people are on a mission – they’re seeking. I end up meeting them because they’re not finding! I often find that people in that position are frustrated. When I point out to them that nothing in their lives will change if they keep doing the same things, the actually penny drops - sometimes! Nothing in your life will change if you don’t do something different yourself. I mean something psychologically and radically different. But, believe it or not, you just have to make tiny changes for the whole of your life to change – the bit that’s radical is that, as a normal adult, your subconscious mind hasn’t done anything new since you were a teenager. So, if you do something different now, that’s radical as far as your subconscious is concerned. Our lives are created by the repetitive subconscious processes that constantly and consistently trot out the same reactive behaviours to what we think of as our life. Life would be so different if you interrupted that process. Small interruptions lead to a complete breakdown in the system. And, once the system is broken, you can remodel it to your own liking, based on the things that you want out of life. So, what are we talking about? Well, something as simple as brushing your teeth with the 'other' hand will get the ball rolling. And here’s why. Everything we do routinely is done automatically - so we pay no attention. Sooner or later everything becomes routine. This means that we end up paying attention to nothing. Yet psychology tells us that our ability to be successful is correlated with our ability to pay attention. We’ve got to learn how to pay attention. When you do something as simple as brushing your teeth with ‘the other hand’, you stop your subconscious mind in its automatic tracks. You have called yourself to attention by choosing to doing something routine in a non-automatic manner. That’s the first plus. The second plus is that, in doing that, in brushing your teeth in a non-routine way, you simply have to pay more than the normal amount of attention to the task. You’re using the system to break the system – the system that has held you within an automatically created version of reality for all of your adult life. No wonder nothing has been changing. But, with small change, comes transformation. Once you break the smallest links in the system, the whole illusion crumbles. You will see life for what it is – not the existence that you’ve been sleepwalking through but a life of opportunity and possibility. And, now that you’ve started to take control of your own mind, you can take the steps that used to be beyond your field of vision. |
