Today's Quick Tip
BE WHERE YOU ARE
Today's Personal Development Video
EFFORTLESS LIVING EXPLAINED
Be where you are and do what you're doing. Don't be judgemental - "I don't like what I'm doing", "He's an idiot", "She's a bitch". Don't wish you life away - "I'm looking forward to the weekend", "I can't wait for my holidays", "I wish I had a different job".
Just be where you are and do what you're doing. Now. If you do what you have to do as mindfullly as possible, being as present as possible, you'll change your life... effortlessly. The effort is in the judging, wishing and annoying ourselves.
BEING ON A MISSION
I know, from many of you, that you are entertained by the weekly "Normal People" story. But, in a way, these stories are judgemental. And, if I were following today's tip, I wouldn't be judgemental. So let's talk about something else this morning.
I've just spent a week with over one hundred psychologists and psychology students at the University of Sussex - people trying to understand what makes us tick, or why the system breaks down and we don't tick as we should. Many of those people (not all of them) are on a mission.
As I travelled home at the weekend, the weekend was crowded with, mainly, families heading off on the annual holiday. Many of them (not all of them - we talked about some of them a couple of weeks ago) were on a mission too.
Most of the large organizations with whom I work have a mission - often encapsulated in a Mission Statement. But there's a difference between having a mission and being on a mission.
What's your mission?
Today's Reflection
WHY NOW MATTERS SO MUCH
As we've explored in a number of recent videos and reflections, at this moment your life is exactly how it's meant to be. The current place in which you find yourself - good, bad or indifferent - is the result of everything that you've done or failed to do in every moment leading up to now. So it is as it is as a result of what's gone before - not because of some external force, not because of the economic environment, not because the "system is unfair". You are where you are because of you.
That being the case, it almost goes without saying that where you are in the future, how your life is tomorrow, next year or in ten years from now, is a direct result of what you do now - not in ten years time... NOW.
A lot has been said and written on the importance of living in the moment, of being mindful now, of investing your energy in what you're doing at this moment. Much has been made of the focus and consequent success that is to be had from living in the moment. The great meditative traditions talk of the altered state of mind we experience when we live in the moment.
But the moment is even more important than all of that. You weave the fabric of your life in the moment. What you do now will influence what happens next. How you feel now will influence what you do now. You've got to stop "feeling" or "experiencing" the unreality of the thoughts that are rattling around in your head and start being in the moment.
Only when you are in the moment can you do what needs to be done to the best of your ability. Only when you are in the moment can you even know that what you're doing in the moment is the right thing to be doing - not in some moralistic sense, but in the context of what you want from life.
