This Week's Practical Tip
START SMALL
This Week's Personal Development Video
DIFFERENT ACTIONS LEAD TO DIFFERENT RESULTS
Do something small and innocuous today as if you really, really mean it. What do I mean? Pay detailed attention to the many movements involved in, for example, buttering toast, shaving, brushing your hair - there are a million and one things that we do automatically every day. But, until you start doing the small things as if you mean it, you'll do nothing as if you mean it. If you start doing the small things deliberately, it changes everything.
Forthcoming Open Workshop
EXTRAORDINARY SUCCESS THROUGH PURPOSEFUL FOCUS
Understanding what's wrong with you (not you specifically... all of us) is the first step to taking charge of your own state of mind. Once you do that everything is up for grabs. Learn how to turn off the autopilot and start living the life that you want...
As I wrote the heading for this morning's video, the obviousness of what I was writing struck me. We all know that repeatedly doing the same thing repeatedly leads to the same outcome. We all know that, in order to achieve something different, something different needs to be done. But, if you look at your life today and compare the minor detail of it to the minor detail, say, ten weeks, months and years ago - little really changes. Sure, our surroundings change, the people we work with change, the challenges that we face change - but our automated system for perceiving our surroundings doesn't see any of those changes - it is preoccupied by our inner world and our inner world hasn't radically changed since we were three years old.
This is not some philosophical attempt at an explanation of the human condition - it is a brief summary of the scientifically established ways in which the human cognitive system perceives the world. This is the system that only allows us perceive what we expect to perceive - the same system that enables us achieve only what we expect to achieve. And, given that our global expectations of and for ourselves were cast in stone in the first thirty six months of our lifes, our perceptiion, today, is very limited and we tend to live down to our expectations.
Now, I don't intend to provide you with an in-depth review of how to rework your expectations - we've already done that in the Ezine series Goal Setting and Goal Getting. The point I would make today is that, even if you have set new goals for yourself in a psychologically effective way, your wiring will still compel you to continue to perform the minor details of your life in the same way that you've always done. This is crucial - because change comes about as a result of an accumulation of all the small stuff... all the little choices that you have made or failed to make up to today have brought you to today. A continuation of the same will bring you to the same outcome tomorrow or in ten years time... the devil is in the detail.
Hence today's video... what are you going to do differently? It doesn't have to be something big or earth-shattering. Every small change you make - or, to be precise, every small thing you do differently - sets you on a different path and, most importantly, because each new action is done deliberately, sets you on a path to purposeful focus and the way of doing all things deliberately.
