GETTING BACK ON THE HORSE!
STAYING ON TRACK
Write out a short list of the key things that should, if you maintain perseverant focus, demand your greatest level of attention and action - three of four items at most. Fold up that piece of paper and put it somewhere safe. Put a reminder in your diary - about six or seven months from now - at which time you will review what you've written. Don't worry, I'll remind you in early July!
IF, AT FIRST, YOU DON'T SUCCEED...
If, at first, you don't succeed, try and try again. A recipe for banging your head against a brick wall or a recipe for success? Well, that really depends on you and your state of mind, doesn't it. I know plenty of people who are banging their head against a brick wall and, whether they realize it or not, they actually know they are... because it hurts! Often, the daily grind of life, even if that includes ascending the ladder of success, comes at a cost - otherwise people wouldn't moan about their work/life balance, being stressed or feeling burned out.
However, when I talk about perseverance - when the likes of the Universities of Madrid, Chicago or Milan talk about it - we're talking about the purposefully focused pursuit of an exciting goal. It doesn't have to be a huge or grand goal. Who's to pass judgement on somebody else's goals - as long as it's grand to you, as long as it excites you.
If you have a grand goal, an exciting goal - and, by the way, if you don't, how are you going to achieve? - don't let it go, don't give up the way ordinary people do. Ordinarily, we are impatient, if things don't happen quickly we start to question what we're doing, we chop and change too easily. The most obvious examples of this come from the world of business, specifically, the world of marketing. By way of example, I can immediately think of four acquaintances who serially launch new websites - for the same business - within twelve months of each other, frustrated by their lack of overnight success. I can think of many businesses who chop and change their marketing message, frustrated by the extent to which their target audience doesn't appear to be listening. As a result, so many mixed messages are sent that none is ever received.
Overnight success takes time, patience, work and, above all, purposeful focus. I'm not, for one minute, however, suggesting that it takes effort... effort, like stress or beauty, is in the mind of the beholder! But, when you have a grand objective, when you're excited by what you've set out to achieve and when you're in a purposefully focused state of mind, you simply to the necessary, effortlessly... and, ultimately, everything seems to simply fall into place.
