EFFORTLESSNESS MY ASS!
PAUSE & TAKE CONTROL
Take a pause - needn't be a long one - don't need to go off into a darkened room or private place... just ask yourself this simple question: What's Going On In My Head Right Now? Research tells us that, more often than not, our minds are disordered. So, if that is the case, so what? It is what it is. What you do next, however, is what's important. Are you going to let yourself lie there, prone, whilst your wildest thoughts kick the crap out of you? Or are you going to take charge of what's going on inside. Because, what is going on inside creates what is happening outside.
ENTROPY
A small word that sums up the state of the normal mind. Entropy - or complete disorder - is our natural state of mind. So says the University of Chicago... so says years of research, the most depressing of which confirms that, if I were locked in a featureless, window less room, I would degenerate into a negative gibbering idiot within approximately twelve hours. My children sometimes claim that I'm already there... the required twelve hours is not necessary... but, that aside, this natural disorder presents us with a major problem.
If my natural state of mind is entropic, how can I focus? How do I know what I want? Won't it change like the Irish weather? And, if both purpose and focus are beyond the competence of the normal mind, how can I be purposefully focused? The answer is, of course, that you can't. Look around you, there's plenty of anecodtal evidence within your line of sight or earshot to support what psychology has already confirmed. And, yet, last week's video was about effortless living, happiness and success. And, hence, this week's video's title!
It seems that the noise in our head - according to UCLA it amounts to 70,000 random bits of crap daily - is there to enable us live our lives as adults... but adults a la 10,000 years ago: when life was simple and the key objective was not to be eaten alive. The noise "enabled" us make it through the day without becoming too philosophical or mindful, without becoming so engrossed in the wonder of the flower, bush, cloud or passing breeze that we failed to see the proverbial man- or woman-eating tiger bringing the curtain down on our sorry little life.
But, in 2015, there are no man-eating tigers. Many of my Irish clients will be aware that there isn't even a Celtic Tiger left!!! Life has become complicated - needlessly so but complicated nevertheless. Our employers have strategies and missions (many of which are either meaningless or will never be implemented... as I said, life is needlessly complicated); our business has annual, quarterly and monthly targets and the neighbours have a bigger house or go on better holidays. We want but don't know how to set our minds to getting.
That is why we need to stop the noise in our head. God knows that there's enough external noise... but we can't even hear it because of the inner challenge. Rise to the challenge, pull yourself together. Man up - or woman up - train your mind for focus. When you do, anything is possible.
Today's article is about entropy - how disordered our minds are. How easily we are led astray: something that the sales and marketing industry is very good at exploiting... I want this, I want that, I want what he has, I want what she has, I want something that I don't realy want at all.
Which leads me to a conversation that I had with my daughter a while back. Herself and her boyfriend had taken to doing their grocery shopping online and having it delivered. I thought that that was a little extravagant... and lazy! I was put right very quickly. "We shop online because we buy just what we want" I was told "If you go to the supermarket, because of the way the keep moving stuff or changing or adding displays, you buy stuff that you didn't want in the first place" she continued... being a student of sales and marketing I suggest that she had a point. They actually saved substantially by avoiding how supermarket merchandisers play on our natural entropy.
All she has to do now is stop looking at all those clothes on the internet that she doesn't need either!!
