Before you get into bed tonight, ask yourself: "If I could achieve one key thing tomorrow, what would it be?" Don't try to answer the question... sleep on it. When the answer dawns on you tomorrow, handwrite a few words that describe how you would feel if you achieved that objective. And, then, assuming you've already meditated for the day ahead, just go and live your day and watch what happens!
YOU DON'T WANT TO CRASH AND BURN, DO YOU?
Mindfulness is like a super-charged sportscar that doesn't need any fuel... it will take you to wherever you want to go, effortlessly. A strange analogy? No, I want to make a point. Say there was such a car and you had one and, because all you had to do to get it was take a few simple steps every day in the peace and quiet of your own mind. So, you have this super-charged car and it actually cost you nothing - no money changed hands, you just revved up your mind daily and it materialized. (By the way that's what happens your brain when you rev it up every day - new neural structures that enable you focus effortlessly simply materialize).
Now that you have this car, where do you want to go? Where do you want it to take you? Because, until you put some coordinates into the GPS, your wonderful car will do what your brain has been doing all of your adult life... it will drive you around in ever-decreasing circles. Sure, you'll think you're cooler than everyone else because you have this sportscar, you'll feel happier but you'll still be going nowhere. Even worse, you'll go nowhere thinking that you're going somewhere. And, worse again, because you're admiring yourself in the sun visor's mirror, you won't see the cliff that you're heading straight for.
Your mind can be super-charged - mindfulness developed through meditation is all it will take. But even a supe-charged mind needs to have its GPS coordinates set. Being happy in the now is not a recipe for effortless happiness and success, it's simply thinly-veiled self-deception.
Mindfulness on its own is actually dangerous. If you don't know where you want to go, you'd be better off staying mindless - remember that, at the very least, the normal mind is programmed to enable you make it through the day! Mindfulness needs direction - you need to know where you want to go and why... you need purpose. I'm not talking about life's grand purpose - not sure anyone's sure what that might be - I'm talking about goals and objectives. However, with a mind free from crap (that's what mindfulness will do for you!) you can set big goals and grand objectives.
But your super-charged car needs to have your chosen coordinates programmed into the GPS!
