Before you react to some situation (any situation - it could be that unexpected or unwanted 'phone call from someone who drives you absolutely crazy; it could be missing the train; some perceived asshole pulling out in front of you in heavy traffic; it could be any number of things - our patience is tested regularly!) today, take just one long deep breath and ask yourself: "If I were present and mindful, would I react - or how would I act?"
AWAKEN THE MIND - CHANGE LIVES
Everything you want to achieve - today, this week, in your work or career, in business, for your family, in sport, in life - is achieved through focused action. Your mind is, however, designed for unfocused reaction - that's just a fact of life. The implications of how our brains are "wired" is that we never know what's actually going on and we will always react to what we think is going on, normally, making what is actually going on worse than it might already be.
Thankfull, it is also a fact of life that you can learn to focus your mind and take right action. That's a completely different way of living - it means that we know what's going on and we act in the right manner to achieve what we want from what is actually going on. Now, what kind of world would you live in if you were in control of their own mind?
Your world, for starters, would be very different. There would be no stress - sure, there would be challenges and lots of them, but there would certainly be no stress - only an out-of-control mind generates stress. There would be no fear - we're all "afraid" of change (actually we're just "wired" to maintain the status quo), we're all afraid of doing brave or courageous things (actually bravery and courage are words used by ordinary minds to describe what extraordinary minds see and know as just the right and even obvious thing to do). We would take conflict (because there's lots of that about) in our stride and take the kind of right action that would mitigate or even obliviate the perceived problem. We'd do just what we need to do to achieve what's best for us and best for those around us.
Consider what a force that would be in the world at large. And consider what is going on in that world at large at present. Since last week's Ezine we've had Nice's Bastille Day, a coup d'etat and crackdown in Turkey, an apparently mindless fatal train crash in Italy, the forces of law and order gunned down in cold blood in the US. And they are just the headlines.
You could be forgiven for thinking that we live in a world gone mad. But we don't, we simply live in a world where people are "wired" for unfocused reaction - a world where, as social media opens our minds, those ill-equipped opening minds are filled with the agendas of more reactive people. Our world - your life today - is simply a product of out of control minds. However, this out-of-controlledness is something of a mass movement. That doesn't, of course, mean that you must join it. You and I must do the exact opposite. We must take control of our mindsand change our lives. Changing how you behave yourself will rub off on everyone around you... for every one life changed, many are changed. It's time to start changing my life.
