We all want to be fitter and healthier – if you don’t, you’re more crazy than anyone could give you credit for!!! Fitness is a state of mind – the discipline required to get and stay fit is a mental thing. Also, the clearer you are in your mind when you train, the more effective your training will be… meditate before (and while) you run, jog or lift those weights.
THE STATE OF YOUR LIFE
We tend to think that outside events and other people shape our lives - that we are at the mercy of the economy or the job market; under pressure from our boss, "head office" or our clients; subject to each ill wind that blows in our direction - and the moments of happiness that just to happen... wouldn't it be wonderful if we could bottle whatever makes them happen and take a mouthful when we feel like it!
However, the state of your life is a direct reflection of the state of your mind - what is going on in the so-called "real world" is perceived by you in your own unique way to create your own unique version of what passes for reality. This leads to all manner of self-delusion, including one of the most common illusions under which so many of us try to operate... that we are suffering from stress.
Stress has nothing to do with the outside world - one man's stress is another's motivation (or woman's of course!) - stress, like everything else in our lives, is a uniquely personal perspective on what is actually happening - stress is a choice we make and quite a bizarre choice at that: stress is not triggered by what we think about what is going on, it is triggered by what we think about what we think is going on... modern day stress is two steps removed from reality.
The problem is that we are wired to be stressed - it is what saved our lives in evolutionary times, what enabled us fight or run away so that we could fight another day. Today, in the 21st century, it "enables" us react to things that we think are going on and, through our own reactions, make what we think is going on even worse.
Unfortunately, although stress is a choice, it is an automatic one - probably the most automated choice we make. But that doesn't mean we can't do something about it. The first step in banishing stress from your life is to disengage the autopilot. In fact, it is the only step because, once disengaged, you will not allow the autopilot make automatic bad decisions for you... you'll make the appropriate choices yourself. The autopilot is most effectively disengaged by experiencing the moment, instead of "experiencing" your own self-damaging thoughts. You need to be mindful for the experience of now is the essence of mindfulness.
