Pause. Close your eyes. Breathe. Breathe again. Let the unthought of calm of the moment wash over you - free of thought. Breathe again. Experience the here and now. This is where you need to be - here and now - to live your life to the full.
Our facility to categorize or pigeonhole people enables us make our world predictable - meaning we don't have to waste our precious attention on living our lives! It means that we can form a first impression in seconds and that we're very good at stereotyping. A couple of cases in point. As we pondered the desert buffet in a restaurant recently, this French gentleman quipped "Bet you you English don't have anything like this!" "Not really sure" I replied "I'm Irish". "Then you'll like the Rhum Babba" he said. When I asked why, he answered "Well, you Irish are hardly allergic to alcohol!". There wasn't really any point in engaging in any further conversation. But it does remind me of an Irish holiday-maker, here in the Alps, a couple of years ago who got the notion that I had taken his parking spot - "You f**king frogs are all the same" he shouted. I simply turned on my heel and said "Ah yeah, whatever!"... He's still looking at me!

NOTHING VENTURED...
From time to time it strikes me that the client with whom I'm working thinks that I have whatever answer that he or she may be looking for. After over twenty years of practice - in mindfulness and enabling others experience their own clarity of mind - I am just about getting to grips with some of my own answers!
As ordinary-minded people, we're confronted by two key problems. Firstly, we normally cannot hear our own answers because our minds are incessently noisy. As we constantly regurgitate our daily stock of repetitive thought, what lies beneath - the inspiration that comes from the subconscious - is rarely if ever heard. If you think you don't know what I'm talking about, consider this: we're most likely to come up with the solution to a problem when we're not thinking about it... thinking gets in the way. And, in exactly the same way, our daily thoughts block out our own innate answers.
The second problem is a little more profund - because, when we do cultivate the mental space to be able to provide ourselves with key answers to important questions - about life, business, goals, parenting - those answers can be uncomfortable and most of us are not ready to disturb ourselves. It might become apparent that we have to change something in our lives or do something unpalatable. And, if we were to take such brave and courageous steps, we know that, as we open one door, so we close another... with all change comes loss.
