IT'S THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS | SKIING WITH YOUR EYES SHUT | |||||||
|
Our ski season is over! The slopes are closed, the snow is receding – like everything in life, the ski season arrived and is now past. The moment in which you started reading this sentence has passed on too – life is made up of unique never-to-be-repeated moments. And we’re missing them. It occurred to me on more than one occasion this ski-season that the vast majority might as well be skiing with our eyes shut – an incredibly dangerous pastime! But the analogy is apt because, in effect, when we wander from one unique moment to the next, blinded by a fog of useless thought (both the thoughts that we’re consciously aware of and, more detrimentally, the subconscious baggage that weighs us down as adults), the manner in which we pass our days is dangerous – perhaps not as immediately life-threatening as skiing with your eyes closed – it’s more of a gentle, easy, not-too-bad, silent suicide. We’re missing life – it’s passing us and we don’t see it. We’ll all end up on our death beds with some or other regret. Some will leave wondering, as a client said to me recently of his uncle on his death bed, “What was all that about?” Some will die peacefully, none of us will die with all our dreams fulfilled – unless we make those dreams reality, starting today – starting now. Dreams become reality when we start taking real action – the kind of action that can only be taken with eyes wide open. Have you opened your eyes this morning? |
