WALKING AWAY FROM USELESS THOUGHT | SUFFERING AND GRATITUDE | ||||||||||
|
I’ve recently received a couple of emails from ‘Eziners’ who have suggested to me that, whilst my videos and articles are extremely helpful to those of us who want more out of life – through reminding, prompting, administering the odd well-focused kick and providing ideas and tips – there are those whose problems are a little more fundamental than simple dissatisfaction, lack of focus or a desire for personal growth. A point well made – I do try to ensure that my articles and videos are as universally appealing as possible – but I also know, from working with people who have serious behaviour disorders, who suffer from depression, who are suffering from serious illness or living with long-term pain, that there are, to quote one of my correspondents, people ‘out there who need what you’re offering even more than the rest of us’. So, over the next few weeks, my videos will focus specifically on a number of more serious issues that beset many people who would long for the minor trials and tribulations that so upset the so-called normal person. In the meantime, I think it’s worth pointing out that those of us who only have our own state of mind to blame for the nonsensical knots in which we tie ourselves in the ordinary course of our everyday lives should be, to use a well-worn expression, be thankful for small mercies – an expression that is, perhaps, misunderstood. Because, I’m not suggesting that we give thanks by somehow saying to ourselves that we could be worse off – I’m suggesting that we are grateful for the wonderful opportunity of being alive in the present moment. It doesn’t matter how dark a moment might appear – the joy of drawing breath should be enough to spur us on to greater things. Until we take note of that joy – even by stopping to ‘smell the roses’ for a moment or two each day – we’re never going to get what we truly deserve in life. |
