We live in a world where we expect instant results, instant gratification. As a result, we get easily frustrated, easily bored and it is all too easy to give things up before we’ve seen the benefit of them. The average length of gym membership at six weeks says it all! Little wonder people get frustrated and bored with the mental preparation that is required of us each morning to enable us face the day and put our best foot forward. Little wonder that people try it for a while and give up. Little wonder, then, that normal stays normal and, if you’re lucky not-too-bad doesn’t get not-too-worse. You don’t change the habit of an adult lifetime in a couple of mornings. In other words, you don’t put an end to your obsession with useless thought with a couple of sessions of meditation or mental exercising. How could you? You’re hard-wired for self-destruction – how long do you think you’re going to have to do battle? It’s a lifetime’s work – it’s a lifetime’s journey, taken one step at a time. No matter how frustrated you get, each step builds on the last, we never go back to the old life – sometimes a cause for even greater frustration. But ten minutes each morning can transform some, most or all of the other twenty three hours and fifty minutes of your day – your clarity and calm whilst awake, your quality of sleep. It is one of the smallest investments that you will ever have to make in your life – for one of the biggest returns. |
