Today's Reflection

For too long, too many people have been intent on helping just themselves.  We read about the ongoing outcry in relation to the greed of bankers that have brought various economies to their knees.  But, as my wife Lisa always says, it takes two to tango.  The bankers couldn’t have been greedy if their customers didn’t want to be greedy too. 

I do a lot of my work in Ireland and, as the outside observer that I have become, I believe Ireland lost its soul somewhere over the last decade.  It was a confluence of events – the Celtic Tiger roared, the Catholic Church went down with a whimper and I recollect one leading Irish journalist describing the newly-opened Dundrum Shopping Mall in Ireland’s capital as “our new cathedral”.  Of course, Ireland was not alone in redefining success in purely material terms – it’s just that it happens to be a shining example of the phenomenon (if shining is the right word).

But what’s done is done and I’ve noticed serious signs that in the bitter winter of economic hardship, small blossoms of good old-fashioned behaviour are appearing.  Someone told me recently that he and the family had just returned from an afternoon of blackberry picking.  Business leaders tell me that people are investing more of their time in chatting to each other, networking, getting back out there and helping each other out.

The phoenix will rise from the ashes – the wheel always turns – everything arises and passes away.  But the first thing that you need to do is learn from what has gone before and focus on the wonder of the here and now – for it is in the here and now that our future is constructed. 

It is time to start being really Selfish – to journey within and find your real Self.  In doing so, you will rebalance your life and be a positive and helping influence on everyone else.
